Holiday Cards!

Okay, so I know I don't update this, like, at all. Hell, I don't even check it. But having one place to gather addresses in privacy for everyone seemed like the best way to organize it for me. So! If you want a holiday card, reply with your address (I'll use your screen name if you don't give me one) and what type of card you want - I'll be listing what I have shortly. You can reply anonymously if you don't want to use a journal too! Naturally, all comments are screened.

Cards

Winter - generic

Christmas - Santa

Christmas - religious(angels)

Hanukkah - humorous
(sorry, it's all we had...)

Manatees (I don't know why either but it's there)

Kittens

I'll be taking addresses until the end of November, and send all cards as soon as possible after December begins.

Also, if you'd really prefer a type of card that isn't listed here and I haven't said is unavailable, let me know and I'll see what I can get.

Nuzlocke Pearl update

Welp. Accidentally defeated the first Pokemon seen on Route 202. Caught a Kricketot and a Budew in routes 203 and 204. Lyra, the Kricketot, was defeated while I was training her up to speed. Figures. I should have taught her Hidden Power so she'd have some other form of attack. That was stupid of me, banking on Bide alone in a Nuzlocke challenge. I'll try to be more careful with the other newbie.

So, at the end of the second day of the challenge, here's what things look like:

Wow, what am I doing?

A Nuzlocke challenge, that's what. I have a new copy of Pearl and that's what I'm doing with it. (I still have my old copy, this one was free)

rules behind the cut )

I may have given myself a bit too much leeway, but here goes anyway.

Here's some basic stuff:

Trainer: Lucas (Male)
Rival: Barry

Sorry for the unimaginative names. That's going to be a theme here.

My starter was a male Turtwig I named Zed. If I think of a better name for him, let's hope he survives until I hit the Name Rater.

At Verity Lake, I caught a male Bidoof I named Jeb. It just seemed right. At Route 201 I caught a female Starly I named Flicky. Feeling nostalgic - anyone remember that game?

Slow start, not going anywhere until Jeb and Flicky are level 5.

Wish me luck, guys!

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

Look what came in!

Apologies for the quality. My camera sucks, but doesn't put up a fuss about putting images anywhere else, unlike my phone. I don't normally buy figurines like this, but Lucifel's little umbrella sold me.

And the Nephilim.

Anyway. Originally considered putting them on top of my TV but then I decided I really liked the box. Especially with the little portrait effect leaving the side flaps open has. (Hee, Lucifel looks grumpy.)

Lucifel was a total troll even as a little figurine. While Enoch and the Nephilim fit onto their stands with no fuss, Lucifel refused to stay on his, and then when I finally got him to stick, the top of the umbrella came off and I had to push it back on.

Troll.

Ugh. My laptop's screen has started flickering or won't display on startup and doesn't behave until I fiddle with the top a bit (i.e., moving it back and forth). It's getting worse and worse, takes more coaxing for it to display properly.

Why does it have to do this when I don't have the money to get it repaired? ;_;

It's that time of year again!

Yep, it's December! And that means Christmas cards!

I have 15 9 cards to send out. If you want one, leave your name and mailing address. All comments will be screened.

Also you don't actually have to leave your real full name. If you just want to give me a name and an initial or just leave it blank for me to fill in your screenname, then that's fine too.

All cards will have a handwritten message, of course, and those of you who have signed up before know how terrible my handwriting is. XD So if you can't read what I wrote, just ask me! I'll be keeping transcriptions of my messages this year so I don't forget in case someone does ask.

Happy December, everyone, and hang in there to everyone else working in retail!

PROTECT IP Act Breaks The Internet from Fight for the Future on Vimeo.

BoingBoing.Net -- The MPAA, RIAA, Hollywood knows that they have been flying in CEOs of as many companies as possible, recruiting people to get petition signups at malls in California, and here's the big point-- they know they have gotten their message through to Congress -- the worst bill in Internet history, the one where government and their corporations get unbelievable power to take down sites, threaten payment processors into stopping payment to sites on a blacklist, and throw people in jail for posting ordinary content is about to pass before the end of this year. The only thing that is going to stop Hollywood from owning the Internet and everything we do, is if there is a big surprise Internet backlash starting right now.

PROTECT IP (S. 968)/SOPA (HR. 3261) creates the first system for Internet censorship - this bill has sweeping provisions that give the government and corporations leeway and legal cover for taking down sites "by accident," mistakenly, or for NOT doing "enough" to protect the interests of Hollywood. These bills that are moving very quickly through Congress and can pass before Christmas aim to give the US government and corporations the ability to block sites over infringing links posted by their users and give ISPs the release to take any means to block peoples' sites, including slowing down your connection. That's right, some say this bill is a workaround to net neutrality and is bigger than net neutrality.

This is the worst piece of Internet legislation in history - the lawmakers who have been sponsoring (Leahy, Lamar Smith, Conyers) this bill need to be shamed by the Internet community for wasting taxpayer dollars on a bill that would break the very fabric of the Internet, create an Internet blacklist, kill jobs and great startup companies, huge blogs, and social networks.

How this affects you, personally:

EFF.org -- Let’s make one thing clear from the get-go: despite all the talk about this bill being directed only toward “rogue” foreign sites, there is no question that it targets US companies as well. The bill sets up a system to punish sites allegedly “dedicated to the theft of US property.” How do you get that label? Doesn’t take much: Some portion of your site (even a single page) must
  1. be directed toward the US, and either
  2. allegedly “engage in, enable or facilitate” infringement or
  3. allegedly be taking or have taken steps to “avoid confirming a high probability” of infringement.

If an IP rightsholder (vaguely defined – could be Justin Bieber worried about his publicity rights) thinks you meet the criteria and that it is in some way harmed, it can send a notice claiming as much to the payment processors (Visa, Mastercard, Paypal etc.) and ad services you rely on.

Once they get it, they have 5 days to choke off your financial support. Of course, the payment processors and ad networks won’t be able to fine-tune their response so that only the allegedly infringing portion of your site is affected, which means your whole site will be under assault. And, it makes no difference that no judge has found you guilty of anything or that the DMCA safe harbors would shelter your conduct if the matter ever went to court. Indeed, services that have been specifically found legal, like Rapidshare, could be economically strangled via SOPA. You can file a counter-notice, but you’ve only got 5 days to do it (good luck getting solid legal advice in time) and the payment processors and ad networks have no obligation to respect it in any event. That’s because there are vigilante provisions that grant them immunity for choking off a site if they have a “reasonable belief” that some portion of the site enables infringement.

At a minimum, this means that any service that hosts user generated content is going to be under enormous pressure to actively monitor and filter that content. That’s a huge burden, and worse for services that are just getting started – the YouTubes of tomorrow that are generating jobs today. And no matter what they do, we’re going to see a flurry of notices anyway – as we’ve learned from the DMCA takedown process, content owners are more than happy to send bogus complaints. What happened to Wikileaks via voluntary censorshipStop the Internet Blacklist Legislation will now be systematized and streamlined – as long as someone, somewhere, thinks they’ve got an IP right that’s being harmed.

Mississippi Personhood Amendment

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] twbasketcase at Mississippi Personhood Amendment
Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] gabrielleabelle at Mississippi Personhood Amendment
Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

My brother thinks I'm crazy

Apparently he doesn't realize how that sounds coming from someone who's played FF4 like twenty times.

Here is my current El Shaddai game log:

First play: Easy. I wanted to get back into the platforming groove without having to worry about combat at all.

Second play: Normal, no costume. This was a muse-play for [livejournal.com profile] warriorscribe. Muse-plays are kind of fun because they force you to break from your own style. It's kind of like being a player and a spectator all at once. Enoch-muse takes a much different approach than I do, and our favored styles work best with weapons that absolutely suck in the other's style. (Gale for me, Arch for him.) (If you don't know what a muse-play is and my context still leaves it unclear: You know how when you RP with a muse you obviously consider how they would act and not you? Yeah. That, with the game.)

(I messed around with chapter select a bit here, confused me into thinking I have five plays under my belt when I don't.)

Third play: Easy, special costume(no costume for chapters 7-8). Messing around with damage null and watching the way bosses behave. Also had a "final sparring match" with Armaros, reverting to normal armor for fairness and letting him break my weapon, playing the whole battle unarmed. It was a long battle, but very fun.

Fourth play: Hard, Dark costume. That'll teach me to jump straight from Easy to Hard. Augh, I haven't died this often even in Megaten games. But I got into some kind of groove after chapter 3, with some clear setbacks every so often.

Fifth (current) play: Normal, no costume. Now I'm just playing for the hell of it. Might make it another muse-play to keep Enoch-muse's battle voice fresh in my mind. I've been playing cautious for too long.

PROMPTS POST!

Give me a character or two (optional), a canon or RP I know, and a prompt. I will write whatever comes to mind, be it a fic, a drabble, a poem, whatever. Please note that I may ask you to change one of these if I'm not familiar enough with the variable in question.

More rambling about my brother and El Shaddai

So I think overall, he's going to be disappointed.

There's nothing wrong with that. He can dislike games I love all he wants.

The problem is his tendency to talk down to people who like games he dislikes. Or have different preferences. I once said I preferred DSRK1 over DSRK2 and he fucking laughed at me for it.

I don't mind if he doesn't like El Shaddai, in the end, but I really hope he doesn't give me shit over liking it.

As I'm getting ready for class this morning, I hear my brother suddenly burst into the most raucous laughter I've ever heard from him.

"Screen invasion?" I call from the living room.

I'm answered with more laughter, which may or may not have included a "yes". Getting closer, I do indeed hear the strains of You Are Mine. Oh, Armaros, never change. <3

Sadly, I think chapter 8 is turning him off from the entire game. I know it's annoying, but I don't think it drags the whole game down. (Hell, I'm even starting to enjoy playing it!)
